A portrait of a woman and child in revolutionary France

This unique miniature was painted by Jean-François Boudou and is dated to the third year of the new French Revolutionary calender. Year III of the French Revolutionary calender corresponds to sometime in between September 1794 and September 1795.

This double portrait miniature depicts a woman, presumably the mother of the child she's holding, wearing a salmon-pink dress with a white cap and matching pink ribbon. Her son is wearing a simple white outfit with a decorative lace flounce and, most notably, a tricolor sash.

The identity of either sitter is unknown.
